Good matches by Essington U16 boys and girls Friday night – DBA Basketball Essington Cannons
The boy’s game was against Palmerston Pumas and it was a tight game right up until the end. I have been really pleased with the sportsman like behaviour between the teams of late and enjoyed the referee who contributes positive and development focussed comments for the players. Well done to both teams and Essington managed to edge out the Pumas by just 3 points and with .8 of a second to go, it was still anyone’s game.

The girls played Razzle and the match started off evenly before the two strike weapons of Alisha and April (the A team?) were unleashed, creating a gap in scores. Again the spirit of the game is more important to me than the scores and it was good to see all teams, coaches and supporters enjoying the match and doing their best. Ava scored her first points in basketball (well done)… Is she going to be part of the “A” team? Chaquira scored at least 4 points and also managed to perform a Bend it like Beckham shot after one of the opposition threw a pass that bounced of Chaquira’s head. Nums and Laura along with little Alisha also put in a great effort to secure a victory. Jacana, sporting a broken foot also came along and kindly worked the bench.

As we all left the stadium with both boys and girls teams joking and laughing as we made our way to the carpark I thought this is a great way for them to spend a Friday night – not an iphone, TV or mall in sight.
During this Easter break and school holiday week there had been the Basketball NT challenge which Joe participated in, then a second event which was sponsored by the United States and from the short snippet I saw on the news a fantastic chance for youngsters to get yet another take on this game and get experience from others… so a full and internationally flavoured week of basketball in the Northern Territory with basketballers, coaches, refs, administrators and parents kept busy through the break… A shout out to Ralph and Sarah coaching and capturing the stats.
