Basketball season starts in earnest – with two wins! – DBA Basketball Essington Cannons
After a soul searching set of matches during the practise season where the boys and girls under 16 teams were not really getting a chance to develop their plays or teamwork, it was decided that for this season at least these two teams would play in division 2.
The first season matches were played last night at Darwin Basketball Association’s Marrara Stadium. The first match was the girl’s U16 game where there were many trips, slips and falls. In particular there was a very nasty fall involving Jacana who sustained a nasty bang to the head putting her out for the remainder of the match with an ice pack on her head.
April and Alisha scored 16 points apiece in a game against the Palmerston Pumas, winning 37 to 17. Other points contributers where Nums, Chaquira and Laura with Ava who has only started playing this year missing out on a goal… but playing a great supporting role as all the girls did.

With the girls having set the challenge, the boys took to the court. The game was an evenly balanced game where our goal shooting was better than the other team Razzle. That said, there was a fantastic shot over the should taken by one of the Razzle boys that you need to take a look at.
In these playlists, which are made up of a number of videos for each match, take a look at the name of the video and the last 3 numbers indicate its position in the playlist… so “2015 02 27 U16 Boys bball essington 100 0012” comes after “2015 02 27 U16 Boys bball essington 100 0011“
If I refer to an event in Video 008 – 6:55 min, I am referring to the last characters of the video name and the time position in that video, so that would be six minutes and 55 seconds into the video 2015 02 27 U16 Boys bball essington 100 008
I won’t have time to do the highlights all the time, and would be happy if folks emailed me the time stamps of their goal, event and I will update the post that has the video.
The goals were shared more evenly among the boys with 7 players scoring points in the game. In looking at the stats collated by SS (Supermum Sarah) apart from the sharing of the points were other words and numbers that demonstrate team playing – rebounds, assists, steals… that is what a team does, not an individual – so regardless of whether the boys won, the stats indicated everyone was playing in a team as a team… and because they did that… they won – 43 to 18.
Towards the end of the second half it was obvious that some of the boys had used up all their fuel and were running on empty, testament to the effort they put in.

Just for a reality check I include the playlist for the Div 1 game played on the 17th of February.

The referee was fantastic, doing her job as referee, but also developing the boys through advice as well. I think the Under 16 boys and girls have found a good level to start the season with. The number of photographs and videos taken at the end of the match looked like the boys had won the NBA championships… and to the parents they had!
