Day 6 – V Day for Essington Cannons
I am writing this on Day 7 Friday after a great day yesterday for the Essington Cannons… The boy’s next game is in an hour so I need to be quick…

With the draw decided last night, Essington boys were to be on court at 8am. There was no chance to send clothes to the laundry so it was a wash in the sink and then place in front of the air conditioner. Morning came and despite best efforts Joe’s gear was still a little damp when he hit the court.
The early start was a challenge for some of our boys who weren’t so much warming up as waking up on the court. The parents looked at each other and we were mentally reflecting on some of the thoughts I put in yesterday’s blog.
The other team had been warming up for half an hour and I honestly thought another defeat was at hand.
After the exchange of greetings between teams and the first whistle went, our boys suddenly swung into action and before we knew it they were 15 points ahead and the first quarter had ended.
Without keeping you in suspense (well what little of it is left), the boys won well, doubling what the opposition got and both teams played hard but graciously. Unfortunately at the last moment, Freddie, our star player injured his left risk and we hope that icing and strapping will see him back on the court for the next game.
In previous matches Freddy, Patrick, Lachlan, Kadeem, Mitch had either scored the lion’s share of points or created the play that assisted the goal. In this match we had first “International” goals from Erik and Joe and I am sure Kieren, Davis, Ben and Jordan had scored in previous games, but most added to their tally in this game. Davis has been feeling ill and missed last night’s game but participated well in today’s game.
So as if to counter the words of my previous blog (not posted by the time they played the game) the team worked together playing with passion, belief, good discipline, good respect and resilience to win the match.
Obviously due to the early start the team didn’t make it to the market and tonight we will be doing that to check out food and Kulim at night. The girl’s game is this afternoon at 3:30 and we will be there to support what we hope will be the girl’s first victory.
